Protecting Your Business, Property During Safe at Home Quarantine

Alert 360 security company offers these tips for your business!

Our daily lives have changed drastically since the start of the COVID 19 pandemic and protecting your business while safe at home orders is very important! With this change has come stress, fear and worry. As a longtime business securitybusiness security and life safety company, at Alert 360Alert 360, we understand the importance of a safe and secure home or business 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We also understand challenges that arise especially during harder economic times and when there’s uncertainty in our world.

Be aware of potential business security threats

Unfortunately, thieves often don’t take a break but do take advantage of times when businesses are most vulnerable. It’s heartbreaking to hear of small businesses that are struggling to stay afloat also become the victims of a break-in and theft. Sadly, during this pandemic, some areas are seeing an uptick in crime or are anticipating it based on future, economic hardships. At a time when small businesses are facing unprecedented challenges, we know that security services and taking steps to protect your assets are critical.

Ways to increase business security during hard times

As an essential business, Alert 360 is still here for our customers and neighborhoods. Our branches are operating around the country, and our alarm monitoring team is available 24/7. With more than 45 years of experience, we recommend taking smart measures to increase security and protect valuable inventory especially now. And, while many of the following tips are business specific, most of these same security options are available for home security systems. (For tips on using home security to increase peace of mind while staying home, see our recent blog Creating Peace of Mind Using Our Security System Mobile App While Home QuarantinedCreating Peace of Mind Using Our Security System Mobile App While Home Quarantined.)

For businesses with or without a security system:

• First, remember that your employees are among your most valuable assets. Be sure to follow CDC guidelines and do all you can to help keep your teams safe and healthy. Keeping your team safe also helps keep your customers healthy, which is vitally important.

• Include security in your business continuity plan. Do you have essential employees who might occupy your business during vulnerable times, such as at night? Do you have a way to secure your most valuable assets off-site temporarily? How will you work with local authorities to help ensure neighborhoods are patrolled?

• Adjust your smart lighting schedule to fit a change in your operations. Using automated lights can help ensure that proper areas of your business are well lit during business hours and security lights are on after hours.

• Secure small valuables, such as laptops, away from an unoccupied business. A recent news story shared how a small business had the tablet they use to process curbside pick-up orders stolen. Sadly, the tablet helped provide their only source of income during this time. Another story shared how an auto repair shop had the keys to all its vehicles stolen, and the owner now takes these items home to secure them. When possible, and if you have a more secure option, consider where you might store such valuable items.

• Ensure your business security cameras are set to notify you in the event of a break-in or unusual activity. Share helpful observations from your video surveillance video surveillance with local authorities and nearby businesses who might not have cameras. Now more than ever, we need each other and to work together. As an example, recent security footage caught helpful images of this truck, which had been involved in the theft of parts from company vehicles in its area.

Consider security cameras or a doorbell camera that include two-way voice so that you might speak to an unwanted visitor or someone casing your business.

Use smart locks. Our Alert 360, fully integrated commercial-grade locks allow you to easily assign unique lock codes for employees or remotely lock and unlock doors for staff and deliveries at any time. These locks can be used on storage rooms, back doors or any entry. Along with security cameras, smart locks help continue operating remotely or limiting time on-site.

Consider installing a temperature sensor where you need to regulate the temperature to protect inventory from being too hot or too cold. These sensors will notify you of drastic temperature changes so that you might act quickly to save valuables.

Include smoke, flood, and carbon monoxide detection in your security system planning. Early detection of these threats can save lives and property, alerting you and emergency personnel quickly.

Use exterior video cameras to watch live-streaming and recorded HD video from your security app. At Alert 360, we work with business owners who have one location or who need to remotely view multiple locations from one online dashboard.

Take advantage of your access control system and easily manage access points at your business. Restrict entry to sensitive areas or receive notifications if an off-limits area has been accessed.

Use your business security system’s image sensors to snap a picture when motion is detected – such as when someone enters the office or moves behind a designated point – and have the image sent to you.

Gain peace of mind with 24/7 alarm monitoring. Your security system might alert you to a break-in or suspicious activity, which is helpful. However, a professional alarm monitoring professional alarm monitoring center can ensure proper authorities are notified and send help quickly. This is especially helpful if you live far away from your business or you can’t respond immediately. Professional alarm monitoring might also help you qualify for a discount on your insurance premium. Be sure to ask your insurance provider.

For more ways your business security system can protect your valuables and property when you can’t be there, check out our recent blog posts!Alert 360 Security Blog

If you have a monitored security system, we encourage you to check in with your security company. A security professional can suggest upgrades that increase your business security or review overall security tips and vulnerabilities. Many times, small steps in adjusting a security device or how you operate can make a big difference in protecting your personnel and property.

Ask about a limited-touch security package or service

At Alert 360, our 600+ employees across America are #hereforyou#hereforyou. To help address customer concerns especially during this time, we recently introduced a “Limited-Touch” security package that reduces contact during the sales consultation, install, and service – and includes a free remote garage door controller.

Let’s lookout for one another!

We’re all in this together and can lend a hand. For essential employees and business owners who are still going to work, be sure to keep an eye out for unusual activity in and around your local businesses. If you are safe at home but have a neighbor who works a late shift or long days, be the eyes and ears of your neighborhood and report suspicious activity.

The news is full of heartwarming stories of strangers helping each other and families finding creative ways to stay safe, healthy, and happy. At Alert 360, we recognize the impact of this time on our customers and communities. With a long history of living and working in neighborhoods across the country, we’re here for you now and will be here for you tomorrow.

Remember: There are multiple ways we can reduce crime in our neighborhoods if we stay aware and prepared. For more tips and ideas for protecting your business and home, check out these additional blogs:

Smart Video Cameras for your home

Now make your home smarter with smart video cameras and alarm.com.

Through Alarm.com we have video analytics, and with the app you can monitor video streams in real time.

These video analytics provides an intelligent AI that can distinguish between people, animals, and cars, it also can determine an object’s direction of movement, and measure the duration of the activity. With the app, you can program this AI to your needs and can alert you for the important events while ignoring routine movements. Most video surveillance cameras record insignificant motion all day, making them annoying to find important clips and a nuisance to enable notifications.

Also, you can set invisible tripwires on at any location and monitor your properties for highly specific activities like:

  • Vehicles coming and going: Know when a vehicle stops outside your home during the daytime, or if a vehicle leaves unexpectedly overnight.
  • Lingering visitors: Get a video alert if someone lingers by your front door, but not when the mail is delivered.
  • Pet protection: Know which neighbor’s dog has been visiting your lawn. Know immediately if your own pet bends the rules and naps on the couch when you’re at work.
  • Automated deterrence: Set your lights and other home automation scenes to turn on when a person enters your backyard, but not when an animal enters.
  • Vendor validation: Business managers can confirm that a delivery truck pulled into the loading dock, but won’t be notified each time a customer exits the building.

Furthermore, you can set whole areas you want to be monitored and can be notified if anything enters of exits the area at any time of your choosing.

You can take all of this a step further with scenes that allow you to pick what happens if a tripwire or area has been triggered, things like turning on lights or other devices when a person is detected in your selected area or has passed a tripwire.

Video analytics is a way you can make your home safer and smarter and notify you for anything you want even while you are away.

Be on the lookout for COVID-19 scams, fraud

Be aware of COVID 19 scams – security tips to protect your bank account and home

As a local home and business security company, we’re fortunate to be a part of many communities and neighborhoods. It’s clear that, while devastating, the COVID-19 pandemic is bringing out the best in most people across America. Many are expressing heartwarming gratitude for healthcare workers, first responders, grocery workers, food suppliers, truckers, small businesses, and others. Unfortunately, a small subset of people is using COVID-19 as an opportunity to scam and defraud people.

At Alert 360, we work with a quarter of a million home and business security customers. As part of our work providing monitored security, we keep an eye on other security threats that might impact our customers. So far, Americans have reported more than 18,000 incidents related to COVID-19 fraud. These incidents equate to over $13 million dollars in potential loss according to Paul Witt of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Although robocalls are down, the FTC is seeing an increase in people claiming to be the government in an attempt to scam consumers from government stimulus money. In addition, other top scam-related complaints involve travel, online shopping, bogus text messages, and similar fraudulent activity.

Some scams include websites promising scarce cleaning products or masks, which never arrive after being ordered, or fraudulent help related to reimbursement for canceled travel. Even at Alert 360, we have been the victim of scams as we attempt to go order PPE and cleaning supplies for our employees. We have experienced fake tracking numbers and packages that have a smaller number of supplies than we ordered.

Our primary services are life safety, alarm monitoring, security and home automation. As part of keeping families and businesses secure, we also suggest the following tips and information to help protect your identity and bank accounts.

Protect yourself from fraud when ordering online:

• Use a credit card that offers protection and the ability to dispute charges if possible.

• If ordering off an auction site, determine if the seller and inventory is truly domestic. Some supplies from overseas can be delayed for up to a month or longer.

• If ordering from an online marketplace or auction site, check how long the seller has been around. Look very carefully at their feedback, items they have sold in the past, and what they are selling now. If, for example, they have only sold auto parts and are suddenly selling surgical masks, you should be leery.

• Once you order, closely track the item. Some sellers will print a shipping label in order to get a tracking number they can share but will then not ship the merchandise for some time or never at all. There is usually a 24-hour delay between when you receive a tracking number and when you can see the item moving. If it takes longer than that and you do not see your package moving through the shipping process, contact the seller immediately and be prepared to ask for a refund.

• If you feel you are a victim of a COVID-19 related scam, contact the FTC directly at ftc.gov/complaint.
Protect yourself from email scams:

Cybercriminal activity and phishing email scams also are increasing. We encourage you to question every email before you click on a link or take action.

Follow these best practices to protect your identity and accounts:

• Look closely at the sender’s email address. Most organizations won’t contact you from a personal email domain such as @gmail.com or @aol.com. Typically, a legitimate sender would have a company domain, such as @Alert360.com.

• Doublecheck spelling. Misspellings or spellings that are just a few letters off in a company name or email domain can also be signs of a fake or phishing email. Pay close attention to spelling.

• Read the email closely for bad grammar, misspellings or poor writing. These are most likely signs of a scam.

• Be wary of attachments or links. One thing phishing emails have in common is most will either contain an infected attachment or link to a bogus website. The website might require a login or other personal information.

• Be wary of requests for a phone call. Much like suspicious attachments or links, some scammers will request you call a specific phone number and then ask for sensitive information. If you’re concerned, it’s good practice to use a phone number you already have for the company and not one sent in an email.

• Don’t feel pressured to respond. Another common scam is someone such as a company CEO, someone you work with or a family member asking for quick action and pressure to respond. Be aware of this tactic and don’t respond.

• Be safe, not sorry. When in doubt, delete the email without clicking, calling or responding.

For additional tips, see our past blog Protect Your Identity and Avoid these Common Scams.

Protect yourself from in-person fraud:

Alert 360 has also seen an increase in people going door-to-door, attempting to convince home security customers to change their security providers. Some door-to-door scammers attempt to gain access to homes or to bank account information using deceptive tactics and pressure. Alert 360 customers who have been approached under false pretenses, should call Alert 360 immediately at 888-642-4567.

Stay Safe When Strangers Knock

Know what to do when faced with price gouging:

Almost all states have instituted severe price gouging penalties. If a seller charges a higher-than-usual price (usually 10% or more) for a commodity considered essential under a state of emergency or public health crisis, that is price gouging.

While each state might include various products in their statutes, some products covered under COVID-19 declarations often include:
• protective masks
• sanitizing and disinfecting supplies, such as hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, supplies for surface cleaning, and commercial cleaning supplies
• personal protective equipment (PPE), including gowns, booties, gloves and other protective gear
• COVID-19 test kits, swabs, and related consumable medical supplies used in administering tests
• medicines, personal care, and childcare products
• potentially communications and computer equipment used for working remotely

If you feel you are the victim of price gouging, contact your state’s consumer protection agency for instructions on reporting it.

Please know COVID-19 will not prevent Alert 360 from continuing to provide you with our industry-leading customer service. Your safety is of the utmost importance, and we are always here to assist you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

The Season for Spring Cleaning and Social Distancing has Arrived!

Coronavirus (COVID-19) has led many to increase precautions in regards to cleaning and disinfecting. People are washing their hands and using sanitizer more than ever, but it’s important to remember your household and business surfaces, including your security and smart home devices, as well.

Although there are similarities, cleaning and disinfecting are two different things. Cleaning removes contaminants from a surface while disinfecting kills pathogens. The Center for Disease Control has recommended you do both, even if no one in your home is sick. Person-to-person transmission poses a much higher risk than transmitting via surfaces, but the CDC recommends cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces at least once daily, just to be safe. You should especially be doing both daily if anyone or anything has entered or left your home or business.

While you may remember surfaces like doorknobs, countertops, faucets and remote controls, it is important to remember your security devices as well.

Precaution should be used with many electronic devices, including security panels, thermostats and door-lock keypads, as spraying liquids directly onto a keypad or security panel could allow the liquid to get inside damaging electrical circuits. Whether cleaning or disinfecting, you should be very careful not to let water accumulate on the surface of your device.

You should clean surfaces first, removing any dust, debris or contaminants. This can be done by wiping the surfaces down with a damp wrung-out hand towel (use soapy water and ring out the hand towel to nearly dry). You may also use a cleaning spray if you would prefer spraying the wipe or towel first and not the panel. Once you have cleaned each surface, it is important to use a surface-appropriate disinfectant. 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes and Clorox/Lysol disinfectant wipes are appropriate to use while disinfecting both your panel and door-lock keypads.

When cleaning these devices, pay extra attention to your cell phones and key fobs. We touch and hold these objects throughout the day, and it’s easy to forget how contaminated they can become. Many use their cell phones to arm and disarm their security system, in addition to daily talking and texting. Apple recently announced you can now use disinfecting wipes, such as Lysol or Clorox wipes on your Apple devices. If you are uncertain about using a disinfecting wipe on your electronics, there are alternatives to consider as well. There are numerous kits and cleaning wipes designed specifically for cleaning your mobile devices. As with all electronic devices, take special care to not allow moisture to accumulate or seep into crevices or openings.

If you are able to splurge, there are also UV phone baths available. These devices, which are roughly the size of a hardback book, feature UV lights in both the lid and base. Once you place your phone inside, it immerses your phone in germ-killing UV lights. These devices can also be used to safely clean your keys, key fob and credit cards.

If you are uncertain whether your choice of disinfectant protects against COVID-19, you may visit EPA’s recommended disinfectants against SARS & COVID 19 for a comprehensive list of products approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency for use.

Many security panels have a built-in cleaning mode you can activate under your menu settings to ensure you do not trigger a false alarm while cleaning. Please read your panel’s manual if you are unsure of how to activate this feature. Alert 360 features most of its product instruction manuals on our products page; you may click Alert 360 product manuals to access this page. If you need further assistance with this process, you may always reach us at 888-642-4567.

Your security devices and smart home equipment can also help with social distancing. If you have a doorbell camera, this is a great opportunity to utilize your wireless features to check on food or package delivery without opening your door. You also have the option of viewing your doorbell camera from your wireless devices while having a two-way voice conversation with whoever is at your door without ever having to violate social distancing recommendations.

With more people ordering every-day necessities online now, there has been an unexpected uptick in porch theft. With a doorbell camera, you can set up motion detection. This notifies you of any movement on your doorbell camera, allowing you to claim your package quickly before anyone else has the chance to. It also can provide you wide-angled, high-definition video evidence, should someone steal a package before you’re able to obtain it.

You should also utilize this time to learn more about your system and all its available functions. If you have an interactive service powered by Alarm.com, be sure to login with your username and password, and explore all the available perks your service provides.

Please know COVID-19 will not prevent Alert 360 from continuing to provide you with our industry-leading customer service. Your safety is of the utmost importance, and we are always here to assist you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

How Can I Turn My Sprinklers into a Smart Sprinkler System

If you have a smart home security system like ADT Control or Alarm.com and you have an old sprinkler system you have probably already asked, how can I turn my sprinklers into a smart sprinkler system? This post can help you with that.

Chances are you are already using your smart security system to turn on lights in your yard or notify you when someone or an animal walk on your lawn, but if you do not have smart sprinkler control you can learn how to get it in this post.

Just like switching out most devices in your home with smarter ones is fairly simple, so is switching out your irrigation controller with a smart irrigation controller. The first step is finding the sprinkler controller for your irrigation system. Usually it is in the garage.

The second step is swapping out the controller with either a Rachio or a Rain Bird controller so they can integrate with alarm.com just like the other smart devices. Ideally, you choose one of these controllers so that you can have one app to simplify things. Then you can remotely control and monitor your sprinklers from the alarm.com app.

How to add my Rachio to my alarm.com app?

1) Make sure the Irrigation Option is added to your account
2) Log in to the Alarm.com mobile app
3) On the home page of the app, scroll to the Irrigation card and tap “Connect to account”

4) Enter your Rachio app credentials and select “Allow Access”

5) Wait for the controller to load. The Irrigation card will refresh after authorization is complete.

How to add the Rain Bird Controller to an Alarm.com account:

  1. Write down or photograph the serial number on the back of the LNK Wi-Fi Module.
  2. On a mobile device, log into the Rain Bird app.
  3. Select the Controller, then tap the Settings icon.

    Rain Bird settings.png

  4. Tap to expand Connected Home, then tap the toggle switch next to Alarm.com.

    Connected Home.jpg

  5. Return to the home page of the Rain Bird app.

How Do I Know Which DSC Keypad Replacement Door I Need?

If your DSC Keypad Door is broken and now you cant close it you have probably asked, how do I know which dsc keypad replacement door I need?

It is fairly easy to figure out. There are two different size DSC keypads. The larger one is considered an all-in-one keypad panel called the ADT DSC Impassa.

The smaller one is for the hardwired DSC Powerseries Premise Pro System. It has a control panel cabinet box in a closet and a hardwired keypad.

If you have the larger keypad called the Impassa you can purchase a new door for it here. If you want to look at other wireless parts you could add to your dsc system like a smoke detector, flood sensor, and much more then go here.

If you have the small keypad that is hardwired you can purchase a new door for it here. Your system is hardwired and if you wanted to add a hardwired contact, motion, or smoke detector you can get them from our shop. If your system also has a wireless receiver than you can also add wireless components here.

If you need help installing the new door you can follow the instructions here or watch our video where we show you how easy it is to replace it.

Alert 360 Earns Third Consecutive TMA Five Diamond Monitoring Center

Alert 360, one of the nations’ largest providers of home and business security and automation, announced it has renewed its “TMA Five Diamond Monitoring Center” designation through The Monitoring Association (TMA). According to TMA, of the approximately 2,700 monitoring centers in the United States that communicate and interact with police, fire and emergency services agencies. Fewer than 120 monitoring centers have achieved the Five Diamond designation. This marks the third year in a row Alert 360 has been recognized for its excellence in the monitoring of security systems and dedication to its home and business security customers.

“As a leading security company that operates 24/7 and operates our own, U.S.-based alarm monitoring center, our team never rests in its pursuit of the highest quality of service,” said Richard Ginsburg, president, and CEO Alert 360. “We recognize the extreme importance of providing a service that saves lives, protects properties, and creates convenience and comfort. These are services we take very seriously and that require a daily commitment to excellence in all we do. On behalf of the communities we serve and the quarter of a million home and business security customers we help protect, we are honored to earn this recognition for excellence in alarm monitoring and customer service for the past three years.”

The Five Diamond designation is granted annually to alarm monitoring centers that satisfy all the requirements of The Monitoring Association’s “five points of excellence,” which include a commitment to:

• ongoing job-related education and testing by having 100% of its monitoring center operators certified using the TMA online training series on industry best practices;
• random inspections and quality criteria standards by a nationally recognized testing laboratory such as FM Approvals, Intertek/ETL and UL;
• raising the industry standards through TMA membership and participation in its activities;
• reducing false dispatches; and
• the highest levels of customer service.

The TMA’s Five Diamond designation specifically signifies that a monitoring company has demonstrated an exceptionally high degree of responsibility to its local communities. Also to customers through the investment of time, money and commitment to quality alarm operator training. These alarm monitoring professionals serve as a life-saving link between residential or business properties and police, fire and emergency services in their areas.

The TMA Monitoring Center Operator course covers multiple levels of monitoring center communications with customers, police, fire and emergency communications centers.
