How to link your alarm.com or ADT control accounts

If you have two or more Alarm.com accounts, there is a way to link them all together so that you can view them all by logging in once. No more jumping between different login names and all that logging in and out. You do need to have an account set up for each of the individual accounts in order to link them to one login. Once all accounts are set up, pick the one that is going to be the main one. This is the one you want to use whenever you want to access your accounts going forward. You only need to link in one place, the web portal, or the app, and it will link your systems for either option.

Steps easy as 1-2-3
1. Create the second (or third, etc) login (though you will most likely not use it more than once)
2. Log into the Web Portal or the App on the account you want to be the primary and link the additional location.
3. Enjoy the ease of switching between properties on the same login!

Using the Web Portal:

Once you’re logged in, you can go into the settings menu by selecting the Settings icon on the left side of the screen. Then select the “Log In Information” option, and then “Link a System”. You’ll then press the “+Add” button to pull up the login options. Enter the login name and password for the account you want to link and continue to the next screen. Read through a couple of little instructions that pop up and then press “Continue”.

Using the mobile app:

Log in and open the menu by selecting the hamburger menu icon (the three horizontal lines at the top left of the screen). Then you’ll select “Login Information” in the second grouping of options. Then select “Link a System” and press the “+Add” button. You will then be prompted to enter the login information for the other account that you want to link. Press the next button, read through a couple of instructions on the next screen, and then press “Continue”.

You’ll now be able to switch between the two different account home pages in the system drop-down menu. This can be found back in the menu on the left of the screen near the top. You’ll see the name of what system you’re currently looking at and then you’ll be able to switch to view the other system. Note that a secondary login appears for any accounts that are attached to the main account so you may see that you (or anyone else who has linked the account) have two logins under the “User” menu.

Please contact us here if you have any additional questions we can help you with regarding linking your Alarm.com or ADT Control accounts together on one login.

Has Crime gone up during the COVID pandemic and quarantine?

As we have all been in quarantine you may have been wondering if crime has gone up or not and maybe even worried about the safety of your home, family, or business location.

There have been shortages of several necessities like toilet paper, eggs, milk, or meat. There have even been shortages of guns and ammo. These shortages can lead some to a scarcity mentality and cause some added concern for protection and safety.

Combine the shortages with lots of empty vacation homes, businesses, and all kids out of school for an undetermined period of time, and there is a recipe for some potential increases in vandalism and theft. With police departments halting their misdemeanor arrests there could be less concern for being caught in some cities, making it an opportunity that criminals could not pass up.

You may also have heard of strange occurrences like these women dressed as nurses who were caught stealing packages by an ADT camera. Not only has package theft gone up but so have speeding and opioid addiction.

Some very sad and disturbing crimes are definitely causing some increased awareness and drawing attention like the double homicide from a burglary in Utah and the burglary attempt on Sebastian Maniscalco’s home. (Not the famous comedian, but his cousin with the same name)

“I don’t think that anybody who is out there gang-banging or shooting or robbing feels one way or another about the coronavirus. In fact, they may see this as an opportune time to commit crime” (Dorothy Speight)

Commercial Burglaries

Some of the worst crimes that keep being problems and are even worse while in quarantine are burglary for commercial businesses – especially ones that are vacant because they are forced to close down due to the current restrictions, Philadelphia has seen a 56% increase in commercial burglaries in April 2020 over March 2020 and 22% increase year-t0-date. Retail theft in Philly is also up 40% year-to-date. Burglaries in Boulder Colorado have gone up 189% since March compared to this time last year, but Denver is reporting a slight reduction in crime. New York City’s commercial burglaries have seen a 169% increase.

Shootings and Homicides

Homicides in Philadelphia have had a 19% increase from the same period last year. They have not seen numbers that high since 2007. Chicago has also had an uptick in murders, up 10% from the previous year. Shootings are on the rise in Louisville, KY even though there are stay at home orders in place. Portland had also reported an increase in shootings with statistics showing a 25% increase. NYC also saw a slight increase in murders in 2020 vs 2019 YTD.

Not all cities are seeing large increases though. Los Angeles appears to have a drop in gun-related incidents and reports of domestic violence. It is hard to know if some of these statistics are just because people have not been reporting them. It will be interesting to see if some of the reports still show a decline once the quarantine is over since some might be afraid to report abuse. Though NYC is seeing a large increase in burglaries and homicides, their robberies, assaults, and larcenies are seeing a decline during the covid quarantine.

Homes, Vehicles, and Open Garages

Not only are businesses being hit but so are homes. Vehicle theft is another crime where rates have gotten very high. There are people who have been stealing from open garages and unlocked homes even while the homeowners are still there! There were people home for 65% of the burglaries in Boulder. Seattle has seen an 87% hike in burglaries in the month of March vs Feb of this year.

It is too difficult to say if crime overall has increased or decreased during this time since some cities see a drop and others are seeing a spike. But it seems apparent that commercial burglaries, homicides, and home invasions have all gone up. There are some parts of the country reporting decreases, but it seems that the increases in those areas outweigh the decreases.

The good news is that studies have shown that homes or businesses that have security systems are much less likely to have burglaries. Nearly all convicted burglars were found to avoid homes that have security systems in them. The odds of a break-in with a home security system present are between 3-20 times less likely. We are here to help and have lots of inexpensive options that can keep your family, home, and business safe during uncertain times and the future.

Be Aware of Home Security Sales Scams

Steps for protecting your home, bank accounts to avoid being scammed!

More and more, Alert 360 has been receiving calls from our customers about other home security companies attempting to scam them. As a result, several times a year, we remind homeowners with security systems about common sales scams used by some security companies. These home security companies often use false sales tactics to trick homeowners into signing contracts or providing access to their security systems or bank accounts. These tactics unfortunately can result in homeowners being billed by two companies for the same service – or a malfunctioning security system.

Spring and summer often are prime times for door-to-door home security sales and potential security contract scams. However, we’re now hearing from customers who are being approached year-round. To help, we’ve developed a ‘Scam Alert’ webpage and hotline for homeowners to share suspicious sales tactics or activity they have witnessed in their neighborhoods.

This activity often includes representatives from other home security providers posing as Alert 360 representatives who want access to customers’ homes, personal information, or security systems. We’ve seen a spike in scams the past month and remind all homeowners to be aware of the following tactics and tips to avoid becoming a victim of this scam.

How to Recognize a Security Scam

At Alert 360, we have nearly 50 years of experience installing home security systems and providing security alarm monitoring. Based on experience, we suggest home security owners be on alert for home security salespersons who:

• Tell you that your home security provider is no longer in business, no longer serves your area, or was sold to their company;
• Ask you to sign a new contract to ensure your security service continues;
• Request access to your security system or tells you that your system has been recalled, requires replacement or repaired;
• Show false documents to support claims they need access to your system; and
• Use high-pressure tactics to force you to sign a new contract on the spot and won’t allow you to contact your current provider.

How to Protect Yourself from Fraud

Follow these steps to safeguard your home, security system, and bank account if you are approached by a door-to-door security sales scammer:

Call your home security company to confirm it has sent a representative or to check the details;
• Check all the details before signing a contract so that you don’t end up being billed by two home security companies;
• If you have a doorbell camera, view who’s at your door using a mobile app and your smartphone, or ask the visitor for more information, such as a company name and phone number – even if you’re not home;
• Know the facts. Stay up to date on news from your home security company by checking its website often and following your provider’s blog and social media accounts;
• Report suspicious activity concerning a person going door to door in your neighborhood, or call your home security provider when you have concerns; and
Call us or use our Alert 360 Scam Alert page to report suspicious activity, receive assistance, and help avoid others being scammed.

Remember: These high-pressure and deceptive sales practices often result in a homeowner unknowingly signing contracts with two home security companies. Alarm owners might also experience damage to their security systems and unintended access to personal information. You should never feel pressured to sign a contract without taking the time to review the details, understand the terms, and check with your current security provider.

At Alert 360, we take providing home and business security systems very seriously. We have been combatting deceptive security sales for decades. When homeowners are aware of these tactics and know the steps to avoid being scammed, they can more easily protect their homes, security systems, and bank accounts.

Four Ways to Keep Your your ADT login Safe and Secure

If you have heard about people hacking security cameras, you may have been worried about the possibility of your ADT security system getting “hacked” as well.

Some of the most concerning violations of privacy have come from Ring or Nest cameras where someone is watching and talking to children through them. Other concerns are from a popular DIY system SimpliSafe that can be completely hacked by a two-dollar product. Even though these stories may worry you but the good news is that you can protect against this by protecting your login and putting in several safeguard features to protect your information and access to your security system.

Keep in mind that a majority of the stories you will hear about this happening to someone, they have not had a professionally installed encrypted system. They are usually DIY systems that have been hacked because they do not have the protections in place or because the installer (the homeowner) did not install them with the correct level of security.

Here are some actions you can take to keep your security system and better protected:

1: Update and improve your password

  • Passwords should be at least 8 characters and include at least one digit and one symbol.
  • The longer the password is, the stronger it typically will be.
  • Do not use the same password for everything, the more you change it up the more secure you will be
  • Avoid the obvious. Dogs are nice for companionship, not password security. Don’t use your pet’s name, or favorite team, or anything else that’s easy to guess. Pick a password or phrase that’s memorable—but only to you.
  • The password should not contain the username or be an easily guessed word (such as “password1!”).
  • For WPA2 encryption, used to secure WiFi networks, the passphrase can also contain spaces.
  • For ADT Pulse cameras, the auto-generated passphrase the gateway uses is much longer than 8 characters and consists of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols, making it nearly impossible to compromise using a brute force method.
  • Make it unique: Add capital letters, numbers, and symbols to make your password harder to crack.
  • Because ADT Pulse cameras are connected to the gateway and do not rely on the customer’s credentials, they aren’t vulnerable to the same sorts of attacks that Ring cameras are.

2: Set up Two-Factor Authentication

Two-Factor Authentication is an optional feature that adds a second step to the login process. It makes it much harder for an intruder to access your account, even if they’ve guessed or acquired your password. Once you enable Two-Factor Authentication, the app sends a one-time code to your phone via SMS whenever you or anyone else logs into your account. This means that every time you log in you will have to verify it from a text message, making it virtually impossible for someone else to gain access to your account.

3: Don’t share your login with other people or give them access to your account

When you give a new user access to your account, always give them their own login. It’s easy to do from your web dashboard (go to Users, then select Manage Logins). There’s no extra charge, and you can control exactly what each user can see and do within your account. In the app you can set how much that user can have access to. If a person only needs physical access to your home, don’t give them an account login give them a user code. You could give a code to say a dog walker or a housekeeper and make it so they only have access on a certain day or only on the weekend.

4: Set up activity alerts for awareness.

To receive an alert when someone accesses your account, or tries to, set up a Successful Login or Unsuccessful Login notification. If you receive either alert unexpectedly, you’ll know to investigate and take action if necessary and if you worry about losing your phone here is what you can do.

If you think an intruder has access to your account, or you lose your phone with your security app on it, here’s what to do.

  • Log into your ADT or Alarm.com Web Dashboard and go to Settings.
  • Go to the Devices tab, then select Lost Device.
  • Submit a “Disable Automatic Login” command to log every user out of your account and prevent any device from logging back in automatically.
  • Change your password immediately.
  • Make sure to put a password on your phone

Protect your home from flood Damage with the Smart water valve and meter

Water leaks are one of the biggest property damage threats in your home, and has cost homeowners and insurers billions of dollars every year. Leaks can happen very quickly and out of nowhere. Most of the time it happens out of sight and causes mold or even collapses ceilings or floors. These can be dangerous and very disruptive if you do not know about them early on.

The smart water valve and meter uses new connected technology to detect leaks and shut off the water automatically. This can respond intelligently to drips and leaks in all areas of your home and can also be used for monitoring your water usage and provide valuable insights.

Automatic Flood shutdown

If a pipe were to ever fail, you would want to turn your main water supply off as fast as you could. With our smart water valve and meter it will sense the failed pipe and leaks with its internal meter and send an alert to your smart home security system so it can then shut off the water to minimize the damage that could have been caused by a failed pipe. Finally, it will send an alert to your phone saying a leak has been detected and that it has already taken care of possible damage by shutting the valve with the onboard actuator.

Intelligent Responses

Not only can this smart valve be used to stop leaks, but it can help you daily. Since it is hooked up to your security system it knows when you are home and when you are away and will respond to water usage accordingly. It can detect if someone is taking a long shower, if a toilet is running, or a faucet is dripping. Those alerts can provide valuable information to help you avoid large water bills or potential water damage. It can even detect if the water temperature is extremely low. And don’t worry, it won’t turn off the water on your long shower unless you want it to since it will know you are currently home.

With the meter in the smart valve, you can look in your security app and see reports showing water consumption in different areas.

You can also install flood sensors that detect when water has been on the surface for a few minutes.

If you want our smart water valve it will be released in a few months but we do have this water valve here available now which can be triggered from a flood sensor.

If you have any questions you can contact us at 1-800-871-2119

Top 10 Most Requested Home Security Devices

Our Top 10 most requested and popular security devices below make your home or business more secure and smarter. From motion detectors, glass break sensors, a remote garage door controller, fire, CO2 and smoke detectors, smart thermostats, to security cameras. There’s no better time than now to consider adding smart, easy home security devices that protect your family, property and that will make your life easier. Check out the following Top 10 most requested high-tech security and home automation options on the market today!

Home security continually evolves. If you don’t have a security system or if it’s been a while since you installed your system, there are plenty of exciting, new security and automation devices to consider. It is easy to schedule a “limited touch” security consultation and installation at home or business that includes the latest home security and automation devices. A properly set up security system is something we can “set and forget,” using it faithfully every day and know that it’s there protecting you, loved ones and property!

Initially, a free home security consultation through a phone call or at location visit can help determine where you might benefit most from new security devices or energy savings from home automation. It’s a good idea to schedule a home security review anytime your schedule has changed, or you have had work done on your home.

The following are the most popular home security products that homeowners and businesses have been requesting:

Security cameras – Alert 360 has a wide selection of dome, bullet or turret security cameras that are available including wireless indoor and outdoor to wired full time 24/7 video cameras. Depending on your situation, we ensure your changing and unique security needs are met. Whether you want to keep an eye on children or know when deliveries arrive and if someone accessed your swimming pool, we have the perfect cameras that meet your needs.

At Alert 360, our customers often choose from indoor and outdoor wireless or wired security cameras, front doorbell cameras, streaming video recorders or DVR and indoor security cameras – some with Bluetooth and/or audio capabilities. Our indoor Bluetooth option is a popular camera for its security and unique versatility. It provides a full 180-degree field of view and night vision range. It also allows someone near the camera to have a video call with a person and offers Bluetooth music streaming.

Another very popular security camera system is our top-rated indoor/outdoor Wi-Fi cameras. All of our security cameras are designed specifically to work with our Alert 360-hosted video service and delivers a professional surveillance solution. They have 1080p HD resolution, live and recorded video that is viewable through any web-enabled computer, cell phone, tablet and via our Alert 360 app.

And, of course, the Alert 360 best-in-class video doorbell camera provides security where it’s needed most – at your front door. This camera provides the added benefits of being motion activated with alerts and allowing you to talk to visitors with clarity without opening the door or even being at home!

Learn more about our most popular device in our recent blog: Options, Features, and Benefits of the Top-Rated Video Doorbell Camera

For a complete overview of security camera options, check out our “2020 Guide to Security Cameras for Home and Business.”

Life safety sensor detection devices for smoke, fire and carbon monoxide – are also very popular and easy home security upgrades or add-ons to a new system.

Smoke, fire and carbon monoxide detectors help alert you to danger so you can escape. If your home security system is monitored 24/7 by an alarm monitoring center, emergency personnel will also be notified. This means help can be sent whether you are home or not or can’t get to the phone. Early detection of smoke and carbon monoxide is invaluable in saving lives and property.

Flood detection sensors – Water leak devices also are very popular and help prevent costly water damage to your home or business typically used for hot water heaters, washers and even interior a/c units. These devices can be added to your complete home security system so that you are alerted via your alarm panel, mobile app, Apple Watch or our alarm monitoring center.

Often, insurance companies provide a discount on your insurance premium when you have 24/7 monitoring for these costly threats.

Glass break sensors from Alert 360 protect your home by listening for the frequency of the sound made by broken glass. The sensors report directly to the Alert 360 system control panel in the event that glass is broken and will send an alarm to the Alert 360 monitoring center. Adding glass break detection is especially important during times of increased crime and if you’ve added on to your home.

Remember: At Alert 360, we take steps to keep you safe from COVID-19 while continuing to provide critical security services and upgrades. Learn how here.

Home Security, Home Automation Upgrades Add Convenience

While the above home security features provide increased security, many security devices also offer convenience and energy savings. These include:

Smart, keyless door locks – Keyless door locks can easily replace your existing deadbolts, doorknobs, or levers and provide convenient code access to your home. These locks can also provide door lock/unlock access through our Alert 360 app. Smart locks are especially handy if your children have grown and come and go a lot or forget their keys. Remote door lock and unlock features are also helpful for second homes, allowing vendors or caretakers to easily enter. Smart locks can help ensure deliveries are made safely and your package is secure. Simply unlock and lock a door – whether you are upstairs or across the country – to allow the package to be placed inside. Bonus: If you have a doorbell camera or outdoor security camera, you can view the package being delivered and speak to the driver as well.

Remote Garage Door Controller – Similar to smart entry door locks, remote control of your garage door can be a lifesaver! Imagine no more worry about whether you left the garage door open. With the addition of a smart garage door controller, you can open or close it while away or upstairs. This is another helpful way to ensure deliveries can be placed inside and then protected with a closed door no matter where you are. Along with the front door, garages often are an easy and common entry point for thieves. The ability to ensure this area of your home is secure offers additional peace of mind and protection.

Smart thermostat – As a top-rated local home security company, Alert 360 often offers home automation and smart devices as part of their products and services. This allows homeowners to create a total, smart home that’s secure and reduces energy use. At Alert 360, we offer an Energy-Star Certified smart thermostat, which can help save up to 15 percent of the energy you use on heating and cooling. Our smart thermostat doesn’t rely on one room to determine the temperature. It can also easily be controlled by your smartphone, tablet, Apple Watch or computer, using our Alert 360 app.

Easy Home Security Upgrades Create Secure, Connected Home

For many homeowners who started with a basic home security package, these additions are easy and impactful upgrades.

Protecting your home with intrusion detection with window/door and glass break sensors, alarm monitoring greatly increases your home’s security. Including security cameras and home automation takes your security to a new level and adds energy savings plus convenience. The ability to remotely control home security and home automation devices, such as door locks and the thermostat, makes it easy to adjust to your family’s schedules and needs. Two-way voice cameras and video help you stay connected whether you are home or away. Mobile-app control makes it all as easy as a tap on your phone or Apple Watch.

How Scenes Can Make Your Life Easier with ADT Control and Alarm.com

If you have wanted to automate several devices in your home you can use scenes with the ADT control or Alarm.com app and your security system.

There are two ways you can use scenes to simplify your life. Firstly, you can set a button you can press that will adjust multiple devices in your home. For example, when you push the Away Scene button it will set your thermostat to a different temperature, lock your door, close your garage door, and then arm your security system.

The second way you can use scenes is by voice command. Not only with the app but with Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant you can your voice to set the scene you want. (Like the example below where you could just mention that it is “Dinner time” to Siri and it automatically has alarm.com run the dinner time scene. You can do this with your phone, or a voice device like an Amazon Echo, Apple HomePod, or a Google Home smart speaker or Hub. .

Maybe you want to get ready for bed and tap a sleep button to set the temperature to what you want, play some calming music, and turn all the lights off while locking the front door.

With the ADT control or Alarm.com app you get up to 4 ready-made buttons which are Home, Away, Sleep, and Wake. Each is configured for when you need to adjust multiple settings during the day or night. You can configure those ones or make some all on your own.

What things can you automate with Scenes? It all depends on the devices you currently have, but here are some of them

  • Arming or Disarming of the Security System
  • Lighting on/off or dimming to a certain level
  • Locks – Lock or Unlock a Door
  • Shades – Open or Close shades
  • Thermostat – Set a certain temperature
  • Garage – Open or Close Garage
  • Audio – Play your favorite Music like a Pandora or Spotify station using your Sonos system or Legrand

Here is a video to show you how you can use those 4 ready made buttons and how you can change them, add new ones, and also use voice commands to set the scene you want.

It is super easy to customize these Buttons in the ADT smart home app to how you like and add more things you want this button to do such as turning on the porch light when you are away. It is just as easy to set up a new scene and here are the steps on how to add a new scene with the ADT app:

With scenes you can program your home to be easily automated by just the tap of one button to set it to how you like.

Use your Business Security System to Protect Workplace, Employees

Operating a small business can be both rewarding and stressful. At Alert 360, we understand that your business security and automation system plays a critical role in protecting all you’ve worked so hard for and more.

As a busy manager or business owner, you can’t be in all places at once. We know that your business security system, security cameras, remote access and more help your business run smoothly while you’re on site. Your smart business security system and business automation devices also are tremendously helpful when your business is closed or you’re away.

Make sure you’re taking advantage of all the benefits and features of your business security system especially when you can’t be there. Specific ways business owners we know use their security systems to protect their businesses and stay connected include:

Using smart locks for peace of mind, convenience

Our commercial-grade smart door locks help keep offices, storerooms, and delivery doors secure and accessible. Most business owners assign unique lock codes for employees as part of tracking business insights (see below). Smart locks also allow business owners to remotely lock and unlock doors for staff and deliveries, saving time and travel.

Taking advantage of remote access control

Like smart locks, a security system with access control helps you manage employee permissions for access points at multiple locations. Your Alert 360 access control options allow you to quickly add or delete users, restrict entry to sensitive areas, and receive notifications when select areas have been accessed.

Keep an eye on your business with video security cameras

It’s comforting and helpful to be able to watch live-streaming and recorded HD video from your business security cameras using your Alert 360 mobile app. For Alert 360 customers who use our convenient business reporting dashboard, you can view multiple locations in one dashboard and jump to a specific video clip if you’re looking for something specific.

Businesses with security cameras are much less likely to be broken into or receive damage. Business owners also find security camera footage helpful in reducing liability, lowering insurance premiums, and keeping employees safe. Review our previous blog for more features and benefits of our business security cameras:

Staying aware using image sensors

At Alert 360, we offer image sensors that snap a picture when motion is detected. Image sensors as part of a complete business security system alert you to movement, such as when someone enters the office or moves behind a counter. Image sensors increase knowledge of what’s happening at your business and can help identify if something is amiss or needs attention. Image sensors provide an added sense of security for employees working alone plus valuable security footage if there’s a break-in after hours.

Maintaining a well-lit business with smart security lighting

Many of our business security clients find it helpful to automate lights both during business hours and after. Proper lighting can keep staff and visitors safe, and illuminating your office after hours increases security. It’s easy enough to either automate or remotely control your lighting using your Alert 360 mobile app. Be sure to adjust your lighting schedule if your hours of operation have changed.

Automating a smart thermostat to control energy use

Many businesses connect their smart thermostat to their security system to receive optimum energy management. When your security system and thermostat work together, the system is more responsive and can help reduce energy use and lower energy bills. Be sure to set notifications for if settings are changed or temperature exceeds a preset threshold and threatens valuable inventory.

At Alert 360, we provide the ability to remotely control and monitor thermostats across multiple locations. This includes the ability to customize schedules and create ideal environments inside your workplace. You can also automatically adjust the temperature when your security system is armed or disarmed.

Staying aware using Alert 360 Smart Business Reporting

Business owners with an Alert 360 business security system can view critical information that helps them run their business more effectively and efficiently. Our Smart Business Reporting provides activity trends at a glance that can help make smart decisions on staffing, hours, energy use and more. This reporting feature can also alert you to unexpected activity at one or many business locations. For example, you can set reminders or custom notifications when a door is left open or someone enters or exits at an unusual time. Reporting allows you to track open and close times and identify peak periods of customer traffic.

Business Security Systems Make Remote Operations, Security Easier

Business security systems make it easier than ever to remotely monitor and protect your business, inventory, employees, and deliveries. The right security system can save unnecessary trips back and forth to a location while still providing insight and access.

From security surveillance cameras to smart automation for lights and energy management, business owners enjoy complete control, using a smartphone, tablet or desktop. A business security system helps address common concerns of business owners, including remote access control, theft, liability or customer flow.

Additional features of most business security systems include alarm sensors, 24/7 professional alarm monitoring, water leak detection, smoke and carbon monoxide detection, live and recorded video surveillance systems and more. Professional alarm monitoring provides extra peace of mind for business owners, knowing emergency personnel will be notified quickly during an emergency.
